Alumni Notebook News from the KSC Alumni Association

A Call to Action

Over the past 100 years, Keene State College has been shaped not only by our passionate faculty, engaged students, and talented administrators, but also by thousands of alumni who have shared the proverbial "time, talent, and treasure" to advance the institution.

While we regularly celebrate the generosity of those who support the College financially, we seldom applaud those individuals who so generously give their time and talent. Alumni volunteers provide highly valuable service each year to the College.

Here are just a few examples of how Keene State alumni volunteer to advance the College's mission:

hosts of Golden Circle gatherings for people who graduated from KSC 50 or more years ago
class secretaries whose outreach helps us all to communicate with one another
alumni event volunteers who help with reunions, homecoming, and athletic events
Alumni Association board of directors and committee members who represent all alumni in day-to-day operations and long-range planning at KSC
alumni representatives on the Board of Trustees of the University System of New Hampshire
alumni who advocate for KSC's legislative priorities at statewide and national levels.

With the administration's commitment to strengthening Keene State's support for alumni and parent relations – including our new Alumni Center, now just a few months from opening its doors – we are engaging more alumni in more ways.

How can you plug into one or more of these visions for the increased role of alumni in the KSC community?

host a regional gathering of other Owls or prospective students in your hometown
become a career advisor/mentor for a student or for fellow alums
guest lecture in classrooms and in the larger KSC community
volunteer to assist our Golden Circle alumni
help out in the Alumni Office (survey alumni, maintain KSC archives, update database)
provide job-shadowing opportunities for students
step up and provide strong leadership for class reunions
participate in alumni gatherings of KSC affinity groups – social groups (Greeks, athletes, activists, musicians), professions, and geographic regions
serve as a KSC alumni ambassador at athletic or cultural events in Keene and in your region
join one of our Alumni Board committees, such as Awards or Communications
run for a seat on our Alumni Board to represent your class or affinity group.

By volunteering, you can help connect our College and its students with the extended community. Alumni participation, an expression of college pride, has a huge effect on students' educational experience and career paths. Alumni are KSC's most valuable assets. You are key to the success of our programs and our students.

As we start our second century of service, the Keene State College Alumni Association – in fact, the entire KSC community – needs you. President Giles-Gee and her leadership team are looking to us, the graduates of Keene State, to help lead our College to being one of the finest public liberal arts colleges in the country. Your time, talent, and treasure will help us get there.

Time for Alumni Awards

The Alumni Association awards committee is once again seeking nominations to recognize individuals and organizations that have shown outstanding achievement and/and or service to the College and Alumni Association. The awards will be presented at Reunion next June.

Please think about alumni, groups, and teachers you especially admire, and submit a nomination.

Forms are available online or by calling us at 603-358-2369. Please don't hesitate to re-nominate a person or group and add any new information.

Deadline for nominations is January 31, 2010.

Alumni Achievement Award
Given to an alumnus/na for outstanding achievement in his or her chosen career field, which brings credit to the individual and Keene State College.

Sprague Drenan Award
Given to an alumnus/na for his or her support of KSC Alumni Association activities and programs.

Alumni Inspiration Award
Given to recognize exceptional accomplishments of a KSC alumnus/na who has graduated in the last 15 years. Areas of recognition may include professional accomplishment, personal or civic involvement, or support of Keene State.

Outstanding Service Award
Given to an individual or group for outstanding service to Keene State College. The recipient need not be an alumnus/na.

Distinguished Teacher Award
Given to a KSC professor for outstanding classroom teaching, advising, and student involvement. Must be a current faculty member.
