Response to an apparent CNUP violation by
a KSC network user
Date: March 14, 2005
Purpose: To establish and document the process by which the Information Technology Group (IT Group) at Keene State College handles apparent violations of the KSC Computer and Network Use Policy (CNUP).
Scope: This policy pertains to all users of the Keene State College local area and wireless data networks and information technology resources.
ITG Process: When Keene State College Information Technology Security is notified from an external party or it identifies during routine network maintenance and/or management an apparent violation of the KSC CNUP, KSC IT Security takes the following steps:
- Log the violation.
- Redirect all web traffic originating from this computer to the "CNUP Violation Redirection" site.
- Supporting documentation, including alleged offending IP address, is supplied to the HelpDesk.
- Depending on the occurrence of the apparent violation, KSC IT Security proceeds as follows:
First Occurrence:
- Wait for the computer owner to complete their process (see below)
- Remove the web redirection to enable normal network access
Second Occurrence:
- Notifies the appropriate supervisory authority
- For students, Student Development Office
- For faculty, Dean of their School
- For staff, immediate supervisor
- Wait for the computer owner to complete their process (see below)
- Remove the web redirection to enable normal network access
Third and Subsequent Occurrences:
- Notify the appropriate supervisory authority for resolution
- For students, Student Development Office
- For faculty, Dean of their School
- For staff, immediate supervisor
- Wait for the outcome of the resolution process
- Take action recommended by the resolution process as outlined by the applicable supervisory authority
Process for computer owner to follow for first or second occurrence:
- Contact the HelpDesk at 358-2532 for more information concerning the specific issue and how to regain normal network access. You must have your IP Address, 158.65.xxx.xxx, at hand. Generally, issues concerning violations can be resolved by doing the following or ensuring they have been done:
- Visit the HelpDesk, Elliot Hall 2nd Floor, Room 243, Hours M-Th 8am-9pm, F 8am-5pm
- Identify yourself and indicate you have received a notice
- You must also identify your computers IP Address 158.65.xxx.xxx
- You will be directed to IT security to sign a document stating you have corrected the issue and have read and understand the KSC CNUP
- Normal network access will be restored within 1 working day of completing steps 1 and 2.
Please Note:
Some violations of KSC CNUP may also be addressed in federal, state and local laws. In these circumstances, KSC IT Security will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities upon the advice of the College legal counsel.
