Automatic Password Protection

The IT Group strongly recommends using ctrl-alt-delete (shift-cmmnd(Open Apple)-Q for Macs) to log-off from your workstation if you are going to be away for more than a few minutes. For an extra measure of security, require password protection when your workstation resumes from a screen saver or monitor power saving option.

For PCs:

  • Click the start button and go to Control Panel
  • Double click on 'Display'
  • Click the Screen Saver tab; set the screen saver to start after five minutes of inactivity and check "on resume, password protect"

  • On the same tab click the 'Power' button under Monitor Power
  • Click the Power schemes tab; set the monitor power and system standby to start after 10 minutes of inactivity
  • Click the Advanced Tab; check 'prompt for password when computer resumes from standby'

For Macs:

  • Click on the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner
  • Choose System Preferences
  • Choose Security
  • Check 'Require Password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver mode'
