IT for Faculty

The guide below is designed to provide basic information on what IT Services are offered at Keene State College and how best to get more information and or arrange for these services.

Getting Started: Office Computers (or Laptops), Software and Printers
Office Workstations & Software All Faculty members are provided with a Workstation PC or MAC containing the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Publisher or Entourage) with internet access through Internet Explorer (or Netscape). Each workstation has virus protection and as well as other software. These workstations are on a (4) year replacement cycle so the actual hardware and software on your workstation can vary somewhat from the new standard. HelpDesk, 358-2532
PC Specs
MAC Specs
Laptops Full-Time Tenure Track Faculty have an option of selecting a PC or MAC laptop as their workstation during the normal upgrade process. Laptops are recommend since they can be taken to the classroom you want to use them and attach them to data jacks and or used in one of the 70+ media enhanced classrooms. In addition, an on line network file storage system is being installed so that you will be able to access any of your files through the network. The IT Group highly recommends this option. Central File storage for personal or shared information If you are concerned about losing the data on your office or laptop computer, find your self carrying around a disk or CD to have information available in the classroom or where ever you need it, or want to share information with a group by other than email or public folders considering using this capability. You can set-up your computer to save information in your My Documents folder to a secure drive on the network. You can also request a group folder available to a limited number of other individuals to store and share information other than through email and or public folders. Central File Storage

Efficiently managing institutionally owned desktops, laptops, and servers As part of IT's efforts to increase desktop security, improve reliability, and minimize the need for support, Desktop and Server Services has purchased a product called Altiris Deployment Solution. Currently we are using this tool to re-image specialized and public lab computers over the network. In order to exploit the full capabilities of Deployment Server, we are installing the Altiris Client on all institutionally owned desktops, laptops, and servers. Installation of this client will enable the HelpDesk and DSS to keep pace with the increasing demands upon IT support. Desktop Management information

Getting Started: Network Connectivity
Via data ports Each building on the Keene State campus is connected to a fiber network backbone that provides fast Internet access allowing students, faculty and staff the ability to connect quickly and efficiently. The data network consists of about 3,500 active connections. Connectivity information
Via wireless Laptop mobility and wireless local area network (LAN) access adds significant value to the campus computing experience. Keene State College recently implemented a faculty laptop initiative, created active LAN ports throughout campus, and has created wireless LAN access in selected parts of campus. The Science division has a couple of mobile wireless laptop carts. These carts are rolled into classrooms and provide students with laptops that have wireless LAN access. Keene State College will develop more classroom and lab space opportunities for these carts in the new Science Center. Connectivity information

Email: Fulltime Faculty All Faculty members are assigned email accounts. You can access your email account on campus through Outlook and off campus through the web using Outlook Web Access. Department Admin Assistant or Supervisor submits request

Voice Mail In general, each phone line that is used by an individual or department has a Voice Mailbox associated with it. Adjunct Faculty often only have a Mailbox assigned to them with no associated physical phone. Full Instructions

Telephone Repairs & Assistance All Meridian phones are under full service contract. This means that if your phone breaks, we can get a replacement under our contract. However, if you would like a different model of phone, you do need to buy a new one. HelpDesk, 358-2532
Making long distance calls from any phone A six-digit PBN (Personal Billing Number) will be assigned to you that allow you to make billable calls from any phone on campus and have them charged to your PaeTec Long Distance Billing account. Your Budget Manager
Security & Privacy
Keeping your Virus Protection up to date Each system is protected from viruses through the use of the latest Virus scanning software. While this process helps to find and remove infections, the only way to be sure that your workstation does not become infected is to follow the basic rules of not opening email and/or email attachments or accessing point to point sites that you do not know are reliable and safe. Protecting your Identity & Privacy "Identity Theft" is defined as someone learning enough personal information about another individual and masquerades as that individual. There are ways that you can protect your identity. Identity & Privacy
Other ways to protect your security The school has adopted a Password Change policy to reduce the risk of unauthorized computer system access. When delivered workstations and laptops operating systems are at the highest level of security. Over time the vendor, to increase the security of their systems, releases new upgrades. As a Keene State College faculty member, your workstation is configured to automatically download all critical Microsoft patches. Password policy

Windows Update Procedure
What can information technology be used for or not used for? Keene State College faculty and staff require information technology for carrying out administrative activities, productivity and information access, delivering student services, assisting with delivery of teaching and learning, and for communications. Keene State College expects faculty, staff, and students to utilize these computer and network resources in a responsible manner. All Keene State College faculty, staff, and students have a responsibility to respect the privacy and intellectual property rights of others and to follow the guidelines as defined within this Computer and Network Use Policy (CNUP). Instructional Technology Services: Use of Technology in the Classroom
Traditional Classrooms All of the (108) traditional Classrooms at KSC have as a minimum (1) network data port and (1) cable port. Most (80) of the classrooms also have a TV set with VHS and/or DVD player and (74) of KSC classrooms also have data/video projection. HelpDesk, 358-2532
Media Enhanced Classrooms Currently over (60) classrooms are what is called Media Enhanced. These classrooms have a podium containing easy connections for Windows or Mac Laptops, a VHS/DVD player connected to a data/video projector, and an amplifier and speakers system for audio presentations In addition to a laptop connection, some podiums also have a permanent workstation mounted in them. Portable Media Carts for Classrooms The IT Group has portable carts with data/video projectors or VHS/DVD players for any faculty requiring instructional technologies in classroom spaces that do not have the permanently mounted projection systems. Receive teleconferences and other special interest programming via satellite KSC maintains a 'steer-able' C- and Ku- band satellite dish for down linking satellite programming. Programs can be presented "live" in any of the Media Enhanced classrooms located around campus; or may be recorded to videotape for playback at a later date. Teleconferences of interest to the KSC community can also be broadcast on the campus cable TV network. HelpDesk, 358-2532

Satellite Information
Distribute video programs to classrooms, residence halls and study areas across campus via CTV CTV is a cable TV Network consisting of two programming sources; Channels 2 through 62 come from Time Warner Cable and Channels 63 through 78 are used for campus programs. Program sources include: videotape in all formats, laser disc, 'off-air' satellite sources, live programs from the TV Studio, a sports info channel and a general campus info channel. Programs can be viewed in a classroom setting, by specific groups, or by individuals. Viewing can occur in a number of locations, including residence halls, classrooms, or in individual meeting rooms. HelpDesk, 358-2532

Availability and Use of Computer Labs
General Information The IT Group supports public computing labs & specialized computing labs. Together, these computing labs make approximately 500 computers accessible to students. HelpDesk, 358-2532
Specialized Labs The specialized labs offer technology applications for majors within specific disciplines. Each lab has a lab manager and a scheduler. HelpDesk, 358-2532

Public Computing Labs The public computing labs are open to all Keene State College students. They provide opportunities and a place for academic and social interactions. The computing labs also provide access to other important technologies (not always available to student's personally owned computers) such as faster network connectivity, laser printers, digital scanners, technical support, and Microsoft Office suite software. The public computing labs are open over 90 hours per week with even more extended hours during finals week. HelpDesk, 358-2532

Installation and Funding of Special Use Software on College-Owned Computers Keene State College provides the faculty and staff with a standard set of software for general use, and provides the same software for academic use in the public and specialized computer labs. "Special use" software packages are also made available to faculty and students in the academic computing labs as necessary, and according to the needs of a School or specialized on the KSC campus. Instructional Technology Liaisons Is all of this technology over whelming you? Are you not sure how to take advantage of what is available or just want to talk about technology in academia? The Liaisons provide services, consultation, and training designed to support faculty use of Blackboard, planning & development of websites, scanning of photographs, editable text, & slides, creation of PDF & audio files, digitizing VHS, video editing, and use of PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook & Publisher software. Professional Services & Advancement
Development & hosting of Professional Web Pages The campus has a server, web development tools, and assistance to develop and display your own professional web pages The IT Group offers faculty space on the academic server to post academic information such as a curriculum vitae, research publications, courses taught, etc. In addition, the IT Group offers specialized training and HTML editing software to all faculty. What's coming in the future?
IT Plans & Projects Information technology exists to help the College realize its mission- and values-related strategic goals through a portfolio of services, and the IT Group is accountable for responsible stewardship of a reliable and sustainable technology infrastructure. In order to best direct information technology resources to meet these goals there has been developed a (5) year long range plan, a working planning process, and a Fiscal Year plan. IT Plan
Campus IT Planning & Progress Review The College Computer & Information Technology Committee (CITC) is the body charged with planning and reviewing the progress of technology implementation on campus.
