Pervasive Computing Infrastructure

Each building on the Keene State campus is connected to a fiber network backbone that provides fast Internet access allowing students, faculty and staff the ability to connect quickly and efficiently. The data network consists of about 3,500 active connections.

Laptop mobility and wireless local area network (LAN) access adds significant value to the campus computing experience. Keene State College recently implemented a faculty laptop initiative, created active LAN ports throughout campus, and has created wireless LAN access in selected parts of campus.

All tenure-track faculty have the option of selecting a laptop as a workstation within the college's 4-year workstation replacement plan. Laptops are versatile, portable, and compatible with the media-enhanced classrooms.

We have active data jacks in all of the classrooms and a few buildings on campus have open spaces wired with active network ports. For students, many of the residential halls have active ports in the common areas and a significant portion of the Student Center has active ports for laptop access. Students can connect to a wireless LAN zone with their laptop through a standard 802.11b network card or to an active network jack with an Ethernet cable. Wireless LAN zones cover a significant part of the library. Students can bring their own laptop or can check out a laptop from the library's circulation desk. Keene State College will develop more wireless zones in the new Science Center and in the new Dining Commons facility.

The Science division has a couple of mobile wireless laptop carts. These carts are rolled into classrooms and provide students with laptops that have wireless LAN access. Keene State College will develop more classroom and lab space opportunities for these carts in the new Science Center.
