Computer & Network Use Policy (CNUP): All students, faculty, and staff should read the CNUP to become familiar with the College's policies regarding use of the campus computer network. The computer network at Keene State College is an every day resource that is shared by students, faculty, and staff. That's over 3,600 clients who use the network to search the Internet, post an announcement on MyKSC, take an online quiz through Blackboard, send an e-mail, or develop a Web page; among other activities. Keene State College expects faculty, staff, and students to utilize computer and network resources in a responsible manner. This includes respect for the privacy of information; respect for the intellectual property rights of others; respect for the fact that the network is a shared resource; and respect for the local, state, and federal laws that govern the fair exchange of information. Learn about the local, state, and federal laws All on campus students are required to install either McAfee anti-virus for Windows or ClamXav for Macs, the Cisco Clean Access agent (CCA), and configure Microsoft updates. Everyone is required to log-in to network computers with their NetID (username) and password; this includes off campus students who use the computers in the public labs in Rhodes Hall and the Mason Library. Copyright Issues – peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing – Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)P2P file-sharing applications make it easy for you to share music, videos, movies, software, text and other files. However, distributing copyrighted materials without a license is a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Copyright infringement is also a violation of the College’s Computer and Network Use Policy (CNUP) The IT Group will suspend network access for a computer user until the issue is taken care of. Students, faculty and staff need to follow the DMCA violation procedure in order to get their network access back. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has taken an active role on college campuses (including Keene State College) by sending copyright violation notices and pre-litigation notices to college technology departments. When KSC receives information from the RIAA, the college will forward the notifications to the users on the network whom the RIAA alleges has engaged in these activities. The person’s identity will not be provided to the RIAA by the College unless a subpoena for that information has been issued. The College cannot protect students from a copyright complaint. In fact, KSC may be legally required to assist a complainant in the investigation against students. The entertainment industry is actively pursuing legal action against copyright violators. Remember, students are responsible for ensuring the integrity of their account and it is best to assume that all material is copyrighted. The IT Group does support Ruckus, iTunes and Napster2 as legal methods of music downloading on our campus network. Visit our Security website for more information on how to avoid copyright infringement and using P2P networks responsibly. |
