spacer spacer How to enable Student Workers to Access the Q Drive

Student workers may be given permission to log on to computers in your department. Students must log on using their Net ID (MyKSC username, their password, and use the drop down arrow to specify the STUDENT domain). Unless the student has already changed it, their password is their date of birth (ex. mmddyy or 01/06/89). In the interest of security, students will not be able to access faculty\staff documents or Outlook email and will not be able to install any software.

Since student workers are being given privileged access to information, it is critical that they change their password immediately and create a complex password. More information on how to create a complex password and how to change it can be found on this web page.

Prior to the student logging in you may give the student permissions and access level to the appropriate files and folders on the Q Drive. Basically you have two options for this:

  • Option 1: Put all the files you want the student to access into one subfolder located inside your department folder on the Q Drive, or
  • Option 2: If you have many files that are located in different subfolders, you should create a subfolder specifically to hold shortcuts to the files you want the student to be able to access.
  • Understanding Default Permissions on the Q Drive

    • Domain Administrators and IT Group Server Administrators have 'Full Control' for all folders. Domain Users (only KSC faculty and staff) have 'List Folder Contents' permissions. This means they can (1) browse into the folder, (2) can view the files that exist in the folders, and (3) cannot open the files within the folders (except if the group has been given higher permissions).
    • For any individual users, the highest permissions held are applied.
    • Groups or users granted Full Control on a folder can delete any files in that folder regardless of the permissions protecting the file.
