Ruckus at KSC - FAQs

The following FAQ's are those that we feel will be the most commonly asked here at Keene State College. All FAQ information is courtesy of Ruckus; please visit the Ruckus Help Site for a complete list of FAQs.

What is my Ruckus user ID and/or user name?
It's your MyKSC email address. (This is the email address you use to register with Ruckus). Be sure to enter your entire address in all lower case.

What are the Ruckus player's system requirements?

  • A computer running Microsoft Windows XP SP2+ or Windows 2000 (player will not work on a MAC ). Vista is not yet supported.
  • 1 GHz or faster CPU
  • 512 MB or greater RAM
  • Windows Media Player 10.00.00.3802 or higher (WMP 9 for Windows 2000)
  • Macromedia Flash Player 8.0 or higher
  • 10 MB free hard disk space for Ruckus Player
  • ~4 MB free hard disk space per song and ~700 MB per movie
  • Windows Internet Explorer 6 or higher (medium security setting, javascript enabled, and allow cookies)

Does Ruckus work on Windows Vista?
Vista is not officially supported yet. The Ruckus Player will install on Windows Vista, just keep in mind that troubleshooting support is limited. The major drawback is that Microsoft has not released an installer for Windows Media Player 11 for standard US versions of Vista, which is what the Ruckus Player is built on. Due to the lack of a Windows Media Player 11 installer for Vista, Ruckus is unable to fix many of the common problems.

Does Ruckus work on a Mac?
Ruckus would love to get the Ruckus Player working on other platforms like MacOS and Linux. Unfortunately the music-encryption required by the record companies that makes subscription music possible does not work with non-Windows operating systems, even on the Windows Media Player for Mac. Ruckus cannot create another version of our client until Windows Media subscription DRM becomes available for other platforms.

The community features of Ruckus.com, such as adding friends, reviewing, recommending and our articles will still work on Apples/Linux, however playing Ruckus music will not.

If you have an Intel based Mac, visit http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/ to learn how you can run Windows XP on it. Another alternative is Parallels Software International Inc.'s Parallels Workstation. Both products are in Beta today and even though Ruckus has used both products to run the player, they currently do not support any configurations that run Ruckus on Boot Camp or Parallels Workstation.

Can I put Ruckus music on my portable audio player?
Yes! Thanks to DRM, the encryption software that legal downloading services use to protect media files from being illegally shared, you can now have unlimited music...to go! This new feature makes Ruckus a convenient and legal alternative to p2p downloads.

In order to use this feature, you must:
  1. Have a valid Ruckus-to-go subscription. See the Ruckus to Go page.
  2. Have a Playsforsure compatible MP3 player (see below).
  3. Have updated firmware for your particular player. Some players may need you to visit the manufacturer's web site to download the most current (Playsforsure compatible) firmware for your computer.

NOTE: Not all players are compatible for this feature. When purchasing a player, look for the "PlaysForSure" logo that is compliant with both audio downloads and subscription. Microsoft provides a list at PlaysForSure Subscription Enabled Players; however, just because your player isn't listed doesn't mean it's not PlaysForSure Subscription compatible. Look for the Subscription-checked logo below on the box or on the manufacture's information page on your player. Ensure the PlaysForSure logo is checked for Subscription.

Will Ruckus music play on my iPod?
Many mp3 players will work with Ruckus to Go, but unfortunately not iPods or iPhones. Apple has no plans on making the iPod work with the PlaysForSure subscription standard used by online subscription services like Ruckus to Go. We would like to have our music available on all platforms and players, however due to the legality of a subscription service it's not possible with our current music protection. Record companies and CD aggregators trust Windows Media DRM to protect their songs. iPods do not work with the WMDRM PlaysForSure subscription standard so it cannot be possible.

Can I burn mix CDs of Ruckus music?
The music you download from Ruckus can not be burned. The license agreements Ruckus has with record labels prohibit burning songs to CDs since CDs can be easily copied and given to non-Ruckus users.

Ruckus has a partnership through Buy.com to offer burnable songs at 99 cents a track (or less!). You can purchase burnable songs through the Ruckus page by clicking on the CD icon next to the track you are interested in. Keep in mind these are different files and must be downloaded separately than your Ruckus music.

If you are looking for portability via mp3 player, we offer compatibility with Ruckus to Go on PlaysForSure Subscription compliant players for download and subscription. Ruckus offers a list of such devices at http://www.ruckus.com/newuser/devices.html . Apple iPods do not use the PlaysForSure Subscription standard so they will not work with Ruckus to Go.

Browser questions: Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape

Netscape
To see that Ruckus opens from Netscape when you click to download songs,

  1. Open up Netscape and go to Tool->Options. Click on "Downloads" from within the Options window.
  2. Under File Types, you should see an entry for the RUCKUSDOWNLOAD file. Click RUCKUSDOWNLOAD file then click on the Change Action... button.
  3. If it is marked as Save to Disk, change to it to Open them in the Default application (which should be Ruckus)
  4. Click OK, then OK again. You should now be able to download songs in the Ruckus Player.
Mozilla
To see that Ruckus opens from Mozilla when you click to download songs,
  1. From Mozilla, click on Tools->Options
  2. Then select the Content tab and under File Types hit Manage. Find the extension called RUCKUSDOWNLOAD, select it, and then hit Change Action.
  3. In the Change Action menu select Open them with the default application, and then hit OK. Close out of the Download Actions menu, and then hit OK again at the Options menu to finish. Try downloading again and let us know if you still have problems.
Firefox
To see that Ruckus opens from Firefox when you click to download songs,
  1. Open up Firefox and go to Tools -> Options. Click on the Content. Under File Types, click on Manage. Search for the entry for RUCKUSDOWNLOAD file. Click RUCKUSDOWNLOAD file then click on the Change Action... button.
  2. If it is marked as Save to Disk, change to it to Open then in the Default application (which should be Ruckus) Click OK, then OK again. You should now be able to download songs in the Ruckus Player.

Do I have to live on campus to get Ruckus?
No. If you live off campus you can access Ruckus via the Internet. Your download speeds will be dependent on the speed of the connection from your Internet Service Provide.

Can I use Ruckus on multiple computers? What happens if I buy a new computer?
You can have two computers set up for your Ruckus account. If you buy a new computer, you can switch your Ruckus downloading privileges from your old computer to the new computer. However, Ruckus only permits one such switch every 30 days per customer. If you want, you can copy media files from the old computer to the new computer, although it might be easier just to download them again.

Switching computers is easy. When you log in to the Ruckus Player on the new computer, you will be asked if you want to switch computers. Click OK to agree and you're set! If you have already switched computers within the last 30 days, the Ruckus Player will tell you that you cannot switch computers again yet.

What is eMusic?
Ruckus has partnered with eMusic.com and offers students a discounted membership ($10/term) to the eMusic.com service.

eMusic is a separate digital music service from Ruckus. eMusic offers mostly music from independent labels and has a limit of 15 downloads per month. However, the tracks are not subscription tracks like Ruckus. A track downloaded from eMusic is in MP3 format and can be burned an unlimited number of times, played on Mac, Linux or Windows computers, and can be transferred to any MP3 player (including the iPod).

NOTE: The eMusic downloader program is available for Mac and Windows. Once the songs are downloaded, they can be moved to the operating system of your choice for listening.

How fast are the downloads?
Because Ruckus has placed a server directly on the KSC network, campus residents will experience quick downloads of your favorite songs.

Those users living off campus will download over the Internet from Ruckus headquarters, so download times are dependent on the speed of your internet connection.

Do I own the music and movies I download?
No. Music files you download are protected by digital rights management, so they're licensed to you for 30 days. A "Renew By" date in your music and movie libraries indicates when the license for each downloaded title will expire. If you are logged into Ruckus and play an expired song, the license will renew automatically. You can also manually renew the license by right-clicking the title and selecting "renew license." You can renew a track as many times as you like as long as you are a Ruckus subscriber. If you cancel Ruckus, you will no longer be able to renew your licenses.

Students who opt for the Ruckus-To-Go plan ($19.95/semester) may copy downloaded music to a compatible portable player.

Movie files you download are also protected by digital rights management and can be played on your PC for 5 days, after which time they remove themselves.

Where can I get help if I encounter any problems with the Ruckus service?
Ruckus has online support available to any Ruckus subscriber.

What happens to the music when I am no longer a KSC student?
When you are no longer a KSC student, the files will remain on on your hard drive until you remove them manually. However, music won't play unless you can login to the account and reacquire the license for the songs. Furthermore, you wouldn't be able to be shared unless you are sharing with other RUCKUS users who can acquire the licenses themselves, thru their own account.
