About Office 2007
What is Office 2007?
Microsoft Office 2007 is the successor to the Office 2003 Suite, the software that runs familiar applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Office 2007 will come bundled with Publisher and OneNote.
What are the new features in Office 2007?
One of the most visible in Office 2007 is in its “look and feel” and how commands are accessed in the applications. Menus, tools and task panes have been replaced by what is known as the “ribbon,” a series of tool bars that change depending on the task. The objective is to make it easier for users to find the commands and use the tools in the applications. The changes to the user interface are detailed in an online video found on the Microsoft Web site.
What are the issues with Office 2007 that are known at this time?
One of our goals is to deploy Office 2007 to faculty and staff computers as simply and efficiently as possible. Since there will be a period of time when we will co-exist in a mixed Office environment, we have set the default for Office 2007 to save all documents in the Office 2003 (i.e. .doc) format versus the new Office 2007 (.docx) format.
Last year, the HelpDesk received calls from faculty who were having trouble opening documents sent from students who were using Office 2007. We deployed the Office 2007 compatibility pack, which allows you to open files in Office 2003 that were created in Office 2007 (.docx) format.
A list of known issues that we encountered during the testing phase can be found here.
What if I'm a Mac user?
Office 2008 for the Mac has been released. If you would like to upgrade, please fill out a Request for Office 2007 or Office 2008 Installation Form and a HelpDesk technician will contact you to schedule the installation.
What are the System Requirements for Office 2007?
Office 2007 has much higher minimum system requirements than previous versions of Microsoft Office. All of the currently supported Dell Optiplex models meet the minimum requirements.
When will Office 2007 be available for distribution to departments?
Now! Please fill out a Request for Office 2007 or Office 2008 Installation Form to request instructions to install over the KSC network.
How will Office 2007 be distributed to KSC faculty and staff?
Office 2007 Enterprise will distributed electronically via network shares. Office 2007 installation media will not distributed. Network installation technologies offer faster service, update capabilities and prevent use of the software which would violate the terms of KSC's Microsoft Campus license agreement.
When will Office 2007 be available for faculty and staff for home use?
Work-at-Home media is available for all current Keene State College faculty and staff and can be purchased at Computer Connection in the Bookstore of the Student Center.
