Desktop Management
As part of IT's efforts to increase desktop security, improve reliability, and minimize the need for support, Desktop and Server Services has been using a product called Altiris Deployment Solution. Currently we are using this tool to re-image discipline and public lab computers over the network. In order to exploit the full capabilities of Deployment Server, we have installed the Altiris Client on most of the institutionally owned desktops, laptops, and servers. Installation of this client enables the HelpDesk and DSS to keep pace with the increasing demands upon IT support.
The Altiris Client is a robust software tool that resides in the user's system tray, collects technical information about the computer, and receives job requests from a deployment console. No one, including DSS administrators, will have access to a user's computer without the user's direct consent. Client realized benefits include:
- Faster technical service because a visit to the user's office may NOT have to be scheduled
- Expedited re-imaging of computers
- A more accurate database for planning the computer replacement schedule because the inventory of hardware and software will be dynamically updated
- Faster service when requesting information to upgrade/repair computer hardware because a technician will not have to visit the client's PC to determine hardware configuration and options
