The following are Integrative Studies Program Guidelines for Revising and Creating Courses for the 2007-2008 Academic Year

Senate Polices and ISPC Guidelines

The following were approved by the Senate as part of the Integrative Studies Proposal on April 19, 2006

Curriculum Review Process &nbs= p; &= nbsp; &nbs= p; &= nbsp;

Faculty wishing to offer a course within the Foundations and Interdisciplinar= y areas would first propose the course to the department. The proposal, if approved, wo= uld then advance for review and approval by the Integrative Studies Commit= tee and the Senate Curriculum Committee.

Faculty wishing to offer a course within the Perspectives area would first propose the course to the department. The proposal, if approved, would then advance for review and approval by the designated School Curricul= um Committee within the Perspectives Area, then to the Senate Curriculum Committee.

A member of the Integrative Studies Program Commi= ttee will sit on the School and Senate Curriculum Committees.

Disciplinary prefixes follow the Program (I) and = the category (TW, QL, A, H, S, N, I) prefixes for all Integrative Studies courses. For example a T= hinking and Writing course would be designated ITW course number. A Quantitative Literacy course would be designated IQL course number<= /u>. A course in Art would be designated IAART course number. An Eng= lish course would be designated IHENG course number. A psychology co= urse would be designated ISPS course number. A Geology course would = be designated INGEOL course number. A women’s Studies course would be designated IIWS course number.

Expanded description of the curriculum review process as articulate= d in fall 2006:

Ø The faculty member submits the proposal to the Chair of his or her home department for approval - the Chair will consider departmental resources and the proposing faculty member’s teaching effectiveness, credentials, and ability to = work with first year learners. The= Chair will then make a recommendation to the Dean.

Ø If the topi= c of the course or course content is outside of the home department, the Chair of the home department may approve the proposal in terms of resources and then forward it to the Chair of the appropriate department to review and discuss with the faculty member.

Ø If the prop= osal is approved, it is forwarded to the Dean [please note that the college cann= ot increase the number of full-time adjunct faculty members so the Chair and t= he adjunct faculty member will need to discuss together which courses the coll= ege needs most].

Ø The Dean wi= ll consider the proposal and Department Chair’s recommendation, the proposing faculty member’= ;s teaching effectiveness, credentials, and ability to work with first year learners, and the resource impact of the proposal prior to recommending the proposal for consideration by the ISPC and sub-committee. Alternatively, the Dean may defer a final decision until further information is available from the ISPC.

Ø If the Dean approves the proposal, he or she forwards it to the ISPC; . The ISPC sends the proposal to the appropriate subcommittees for review and recommendations. The sub-comm= ittee will review proposals for compliance with course criteria and programmatic expectations and approve those proposals meeting criteria.

Ø The sub-com= mittee will develop a summary regarding proposals received and approval details (a summary report text to be developed by ISPC and submitted to sub-committees= for consideration). There will be no requirement for a bli= nd review and no requirement for proposing faculty to submit a CV or other documents demonstrating credentials to the sub-committee. If the sub-committee is concer= ned regarding a faculty member’s qualifications or ability to effectively teach the proposed course, the chair of the sub-committee will meet with the Chair and/or Dean to discuss.

Ø Subcommittee recommendations are forwarded to the ISPC which reviews recommendations and forwards approved [other than topics] courses to the Senate Curriculum Committee for final approval. All proposals [including topics proposals] are forwarded to the School Dean for final approval based upon college resources and instructional needs. If resources are insufficient to s= upport all approved sections of courses at a given time, proposals could be held in reserve and offered as soon as resources are sufficient.<= /p>

Prerequisites

100 level ISP courses have no prerequisites

200 level ISP courses may require one or both Foundations courses

Upper level (300 and 400) ISP courses require tha= t a minimum of 28 credits of IS 100 and 200 level courses be completed

400 level ISP courses may require that certain perspectives courses be completed (for example, if a 400 level Geology course was offered, it might specify that the students must have compl= eted at least one social science and one natural science course).

No admission to the major, major content or major course prerequisites may be required for ISP courses.

Competency and skills expectations may be include= d in the course description for any ISP course except the first year foundations courses (TW, QL).

Double Counting

Courses in the Integrative Studies Program may me= et major, minor and elective requirements=

Upper Level Courses

A minimum of two upper level (300 or 400) ISP cou= rses must be completed. Stude= nts may enroll in upper level courses once they have completed a minimum o= f 28 credits of lower level IS courses.

In meetings during the 2006 fall semester, the I= SPC is attempting to further clarify the general policies approved in April. The following are Integrative Stud= ies Program Guidelines for Revising and Creating Courses for the 2007-2008 Acad= emic Year. These will be discussed= with faculty throughout the year prior to submitting them as policies to the Sen= ate.

All students are required to take a QL topi= cs course in the Integrative Studies Program. For academic year 07/08, as part of a transitional contingency plan, first year students will enro= ll in a QL topics course or in an approved substitute course, if there are not sufficient seats in QL topics courses. Approved substitute courses include: MATH 141, MGT 202

Courses in the Integrative Studies Program = may meet major, minor, and elective requirements.

o&nb= sp; Majors may = require up to 2 ISP courses.

o&nb= sp; For interdisciplinary majors, the majors may require up to 5 ISP courses. For teacher certification majors, the major may require up to __ ISP courses.

o&nb= sp; If a student takes an ISP course and then majors in that discipline, the student must st= ill take the required number of ISP courses outside of the major in that perspectives area. The ISP ar= ea courses must be outside the discipline. For example, a student who t= akes an ISSOC course in her first year, then decides to major in sociology, may count that ISSOC course in the major or as an elective but will need to tak= e an ISP social science course OUTSIDE of sociology to fulfill that IS (integrat= ive studies social science) requirement. This does not apply to courses taken in stand alone minors.

All sections of a perspectives course and an interdisciplinary course in the IS program will meet a set of core outcomes.

Interdisciplinary courses-may be offered at= all levels (100, 200, 300, 400)

Seats cannot be reserved for majors. <= /o:p>

Prerequisite requirements for upper level courses: 300 level IS courses require completion of both foundation courses and a total of 28 ISP credits. 4= 00 level IS courses require completion of both foundation courses and a total of 28 ISP credits and may specify that one or more of the ISP courses come from a perspectiv= es area (but not a specific discipline or department). Specific courses cannot be required.

For perspectives and interdisciplinary cour= ses, faculty ought to identify the rationale for a cap lower than 38.<= /o:p>

Introductory courses offered as Integrative Studies courses would offer a broad overview of perspectives in the field, and identify appropriate program outcomes.

Interdisciplinary programs should have an opportunity for visibility for programs as wel= l as connection to the IS program through an II. Therefore, we will support departmental designation to be associated with the II prefix.

ISP requirements for the Associate degrees would be 28 credits (ITW, IQL, IA, IH, IS, IN, II).

Integrative Studies Program: AP and Transfer Credits

Regardless of any number of credits that students may = transfer, all matriculated students must complete two upper-level Integrative Studies courses. To register for 300 or 400 level Integrative Studies courses, students must have completed the equivalent of both foundation courses (ITW= and IQL) and a total of 28 ISP credits. Some 400 level courses may additionally require that courses in certain Perspectives areas (Fine and Performing Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences), but not specific courses in those areas, be completed.
