Throat Care

A sore throat is a symptom, not a disease. A sore throat can have many different causes, including a viral infection, a bacterial infection, overuse of the voice, dry air, or post-nasal drip. Most sore throats are caused by a virus. There is no easy way to get rid of a virus; you just have to let it run its course while you treat the symptoms. Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics, but again you may still need to treat the symptoms. Try the suggestions below to help soothe your sore throat.

Treatment

  1. Gargle with a warm salt water solution.
  2. Rest at least 8-10 hours each night.
  3. Use throat lozenges to soothe the pain, or take acetaminophen/Tylenol.
  4. Don’t smoke or exert your voice.
  5. Take a long steamy shower or use a vaporizer. Steam is soothing to a sore throat.
