Prohibited Research

Research involving the following chemicals, biological pathogens, etc. are currently prohibited at Keene State College because of either the associated hazards or because the College does not have the appropriate facilities, permits, or procedures in place to ensure adequate protection and/or regulatory compliance):

  • Perchloric acid

  • Dimethyl mercury

  • Highly reactive chemicals which require an isolated facility with explosion venting and explosion-resistant construction.

  • All pathogenic and infectious agents classified as Biosafety Level 2 hazard or higher (if a microbe is identified in an environmental sample and known to be pathogenic its culture at KSC is prohibited until a change in BSL status had been designated)

  • Live, warm-blooded animals

  • Biological agents possessing teratogenic or mutagenic capabilities, such as Rubella, herpes or cytomegalovirus or other agents that could cause fetal death, such as Brucella,

  • Recombinant DNA except for those experiments which are exempt from NIH guidelines

  • Select agents and toxins regulated by the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002

  • Human blood, body fluids (including urine) and tissues (requires special permission from the Chemical and Biological Safety Committee.

  • Hydrofluoric acid (requires special permission for the Chemical and Biological Safety Committee)

  • Radioactive materials

If any faculty, staff, or researcher desires to change this designation, the Chemical and Biological Safety Committee must first be consulted to ensure proper safety measures are in place, prior to the start of experimental work or study.
