Introduction

Keene State College encourages faculty and staff to seek outside support for research, service projects and educational programs. This manual is intended to provide guidelines for the application and management of grants and contracts and to provide critical information about KSC policies and procedures related to research and external funding.

It should be emphasized that grants and contracts are made to Keene State College and not to individual faculty or staff members. By accepting external funds, the College is legally bound to abide by the provisions of the agreement and to adhere to all funding agency guidelines, to applicable federal or state regulations, and to the University System of New Hampshire guidelines and procedures. All Keene State College offices as well as all Principal Investigators and Project Directors must adhere to these regulations and guidelines in administering grant projects and funds.

The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects is located on the first floor of Elliot Hall in room 167. The Director of this office reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and has the responsibility of assisting faculty and staff in their efforts to win external funding, coordinating efforts with external funding agencies, and supporting the grant administration process. A complete listing of the responsibilities of this position can be found in Section II of this manual. The Keene State College Business Office provides support for budget and account management, audits, and sponsor reporting requirements once a grant is funded. The Director will facilitate the necessary support from the Business Office and coordinate the relationship with the sponsoring agency or organization.

Throughout this guide, the term "externally sponsored" will be used to include all externally supported projects whether they have research, instruction, or service as their main objective and whether they are funded by a governmental agency, foundation, or a corporation. Please refer to the definition of terms in Section I of this manual for a further explanation of relevant terms.

This manual is divided into six sections.

  1. Definition of Terms
  2. Participant Roles and Responsibilities
  3. Proposal Research and Planning
  4. Proposal Preparation and Processing
  5. Project Administration and Management
  6. Relevant Institutional Policies and Procedures

Please contact the Director of Research and Sponsored Projects at Keene State College 603-358-2427 with any questions or suggestions you may have about this manual or for support in your grant-seeking, proposal preparation or project management efforts.
