Faculty Development Pool Application Guidelines

Faculty development funds are intended to be a source of support for diverse faculty development projects. Given the wide range of faculty needs and projects, guidelines for use of faculty development funds are intentionally broad. The purpose of the faculty development grants program is to support activities that encourage research and scholarship and the development of knowledge and skills relevant to the faculty member's discipline and teaching responsibilities.

Background
The collective bargaining agreement between the KSCEA and the University System of New Hampshire establishes a pool of funds from which all bargaining unit members may apply for faculty development funds. The contract states:

"A joint faculty-administration committee shall be established to develop guidelines, evaluate proposals and recommend grant recipients to the President of the College. Applicants for moneys from the Faculty Development Pool shall submit proposals for research, education program development, or professional activities. Such grants shall be used to cover expenses including, but not limited to, costs of equipment, research, travel, and tuition. This program is independent of and complementary to other College programs such as the Sabbatical Leave program. Any unexpended funds shall be carried over and added to funds available for succeeding years."

Committee Membership
Four members of the bargaining unit (at least one from each academic division) will be elected to represent the faculty and a Dean will be appointed by the Provost to represent the administration. The Office of Sponsored Projects & Research will facilitate the committee process but will not be a voting member of the Faculty Development Committee. A member of the Faculty Development Pool Committee may not apply for funds from that year's pool.

  • Faculty who will be on Sabbatical Leave for the time period of the project activities are eligible to apply.
General Information
  • The purpose of the fund is to provide support for faculty to pursue research or projects that develop their professional talents and interests; funds are not to be used for curriculum development.
  • Applicants may submit only one proposal for a single grant cycle.
  • Both individual and collaborative projects will be considered.
  • All equipment and supplies purchased with Faculty Development Funds become the property of the College and must relate directly to and/or be consumed by the project.
  • Individual project funding normally will not exceed $2,500; collaborative proposals may be funded to $5,000.
  • Projects must be completed within one year of the award.
  • Award recipients will be notified within 2-3 weeks of application submission. Once awards have been granted, faculty can access their funds one week from the date of award.
  • Grant recipients are encouraged to disseminate the results of the project to the campus community.
  • Proposals will only be judged on information provided in the proposal.
Priorities The Faculty Development Pool Grants Committee will give priority to proposals which:
  • have a clear relationship to the faculty member's professional life; and
  • have the potential for furthering the faculty member's professional development goals.
In the event that two or more proposals of similar nature cannot all be funded, priority will be given to projects which:
  • are undertaken by first-time applicants; and/or
  • have the potential to attract external funding.
