 3 semester\, the Chamber Singers are partnering with the Phoenix House Kee
 ne Center to learn about its mission\, volunteer\, and prepare concert rep

DESCRIPTION:Max Lifchitz\, pianist\, conductor\, composer and Professor of
  Music at SUNY - Albany\, will give a piano recital of works from Latin Am
 erica\, entitled\, "Tangos and More\," Wed.\, March 20\, at 7:30 PM at the
  Redfern Arts Center on Brickard Pond\, Alumni Recital Hall.  His appearan
 ce is made possible by funding from the Office of Diversity and Multicultu
 ralism\, and the Keene State Music Department.  Mr. Lifchitz is the founde
 r and conductor of the New York City based North-South Chamber Orchestra n
 ow celebrating its 33rd season.   He has appeared on concert stages throug
 ht Europe\, Latin American and the US\,  and his numerous recordings are a
 vailable for streaming and download through North South Recordings.  \n \n
 His program will include nineteenth-century contradanzas by Cuban composer
  Manuel Saumell\, two works by the eclectic American composer Louis Moreau
  Gottscahalk\, and Brazilian tangos by Ernesto Nazareth.  From the twentie
 th century\, he will present works by Heitor Villa-Lobos (the lyrical and 
 passionate Choros no. 5\, subtitled "Brazilian Soul")\, a milonga by Argen
 tinean tango-master and bandoneon virtuoso Astor Piazzolla\, and Manuel Po
 nce's Sonata for keyboard and guitar\, a fusion of Mexican folklore and Fr
 ench impressionism.  For this work he will be joined by KSC Professor of M
 usic\, Dr. Jose Manuel Lezcano.  Rounding out the program is a recent work
  by Mr. Lifchitz\, his Piano Silhouettes of 2012.  \n \nHe will also give 
 a public lecture\, entitled Mestizo Modernism: Music and Revolution in Mex

 semble will present a program entitled "From Bohemia to Beatlemania\, and 
 from Sierra to Altiplano\," on Wednesday\, April 17\, 7:30 PM\, in Alumni 
 Recital Hall\, Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond.   The 15-member Guit
 ar Orchestra and 28-member Latin Ensemble are both directed by Dr. José M
 anuel Lezcano\, Professor of Music.  \n\nThe program includes the beloved 
 Slavonic Dance no. 4 by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak\, a wonderfully craf
 ted exploration of Bohemian melodies and rustic rhythms\, and a \nstaple o
 f the orchestral repertoire.  Also on the program is "Cuban Landscape with
  Rain\," by Leo Brouwer\, an appealing blend of minimalism\, New Age harmo
 nies\, and \nprogram music\, even depicting a hailstorm.   The haunting an
 d lyrical "Summa" by Estonian composer Arvo Part provides an example of th
 is composer's style described as \n"holy minimalism."  The evening will in
 clude a performance of former LA Guitar Quartet member Andrew York's newly
  minted "Hemingway" for guitar orchestra\, a tone-poem that skillfuly blen
 ds spatial effects\, orientalist melodies\, and idiomatic guitar writing. 
  Rounding out the program are two standards by Lennon/McCartney (Day-Tripp
 er and Lady Madonna)\, and a Venezuelan joropo.    \n \nThe Latin American
  ensemble\, assisted by members of the Flute Choir and Guitar Orchestra\, 
 will present folk dances from the Andes on panpipes\, charango\, and bombo
 .  Music Education  major Amy St. Louis will sing "Crying She Left\," an A
 fro-Bolivian song by  "Los Kjarkas" that became an international hit in 19
 89 when recorded by French pop group Kaoma\, spearheading the Brazilian "L
