DESCRIPTION:This well-known New Hampshire string quartet returns to the Re
 dfern with a new program by Boston composer (and avid beekeeper) Christine
  Southworth including her bee-inspired work "Honey Flyers." The Apple Hill
  String Quartet has earned accolades from around the world for their inter
 pretive mastery of traditional classical repertoire. Apple Hills' "music w
 as exciting\, engaging\, and beautifully performed ...\," according to The
  Monadnock Ledger. As 21st-century musicians\, the quartet is deeply commi
 tted to the commissioning of new works\, and partnered with Southworth\, w
 ho is making groundbreaking music based on the interaction between science
 \, technology\, and creativity. The Boston Herald praises Southworth's mus
 ic "as gently balladic (as it is) hard-driving and otherworldly."\n\nThis 
 performance is funded in part by the New England Foundation for the Arts.

 liant concerti by Alessandro Marcello and Henri Tomasi\, Bohuslav Martinu'
 s witty “Sonatina”\, “Paths”\, an ethereal work for  trumpet alone
  by Toru Takamitsu\, and Edvard Grieg's mystical and heartfelt song cycle 
 “Haugtussa”.\n\nRecently appointed to the faculties of both Keene Stat
 e College and Plymouth State University\, Boston-based freelance trumpeter
  Fred Sienkiewicz enjoys a varied career performing solo\, chamber\, and o
 rchestral music throughout New England. He has performed with the Nashua S
 ymphony\, Vermont Symphony\, Cape Cod Symphony\, North Country Chamber Pla
 yers\, Bala Brass\, Majestic Brass\, and Epic Brass. Mr. Sienkiewicz has a
 lso given recital performances at King's Chapel in Boston\, Philips Recita
 l Hall at Gordon College\, and St. John the Evangelist in Hingham\, MA\, a

  and collaborations on the spring concert. The program will include compos

DESCRIPTION:Max Lifchitz\, pianist\, conductor\, composer and Professor of
  Music at SUNY - Albany\, will give a piano recital of works from Latin Am
 erica\, entitled\, "Tangos and More\," Wed.\, March 20\, at 7:30 PM at the
  Redfern Arts Center on Brickard Pond\, Alumni Recital Hall.  His appearan
 ce is made possible by funding from the Office of Diversity and Multicultu
 ralism\, and the Keene State Music Department.  Mr. Lifchitz is the founde
 r and conductor of the New York City based North-South Chamber Orchestra n
 ow celebrating its 33rd season.   He has appeared on concert stages throug
 ht Europe\, Latin American and the US\,  and his numerous recordings are a
 vailable for streaming and download through North South Recordings.  \n \n
 His program will include nineteenth-century contradanzas by Cuban composer
  Manuel Saumell\, two works by the eclectic American composer Louis Moreau
  Gottscahalk\, and Brazilian tangos by Ernesto Nazareth.  From the twentie
 th century\, he will present works by Heitor Villa-Lobos (the lyrical and 
 passionate Choros no. 5\, subtitled "Brazilian Soul")\, a milonga by Argen
 tinean tango-master and bandoneon virtuoso Astor Piazzolla\, and Manuel Po
 nce's Sonata for keyboard and guitar\, a fusion of Mexican folklore and Fr
 ench impressionism.  For this work he will be joined by KSC Professor of M
 usic\, Dr. Jose Manuel Lezcano.  Rounding out the program is a recent work
  by Mr. Lifchitz\, his Piano Silhouettes of 2012.  \n \nHe will also give 
 a public lecture\, entitled Mestizo Modernism: Music and Revolution in Mex
 ico during the 20th century.  This free talk is offered March 20 at 2 PM i
