FAQs for Parents

Are students required to live on-campus? No, though we encourage students to live in residence halls, especially during the first few years in college because we've seen the advantages that on-campus living creates.

Can freshman have cars on campus?
No, first year students are not permitted to park or register a vehicle on campus. Resident students who have completed 30 or more credit hours are eligible to purchase a permit to park in a Keene State College parking lot. Students are permitted to purchase decals on-line based on number of credit hours completed, beginning with students with 90 or more credits, then 60 or more, then 30 or more. Resident students who have completed 29 or fewer credits hours may purchase permits during the open purchase period (after the 30+ credit group)

How are students registered for classes?
We pre-register students in three classes before they arrive and they will select two additional classes working with the Orientation staff.

How safe is the KSC campus?
Keene State College is located in the City of Keene, a quiet New England city of 23,000 residents with a very low crime rate. Because of our environment, we are not subject to most of the problems of a large city campus, however we are not insulated from crime. We encourage members of our community to partner with us in identifying risks and decreasing the opportunities for crime.

Most of the serious incidents reported on campus occur between students and/or parties known to one another. Theft is the most common crime on any college campus and most thefts occur when rooms and offices are left unlocked "for just a minute". We encourage all members of the community to properly secure and mark valuables to prevent theft and facilitate recovery, if necessary. Information on crime prevention and awareness is available to all Keene State College community members through various campus programs or with a phone call or e-mail. We encourage everyone to be actively involved in crime awareness and prevention. Representatives from Campus Safety work with the Office of Residential Life and the Keene Police and Fire Departments to ensure the safety of the entire Keene State College community. The complete KSC Crime report may be found at http://www.keene.edu/policy/crimereport.pdf

What types of meal plans are offered?
Students who live on campus are required to purchase a 12 or 19-meal plan. Students have the option of purchasing one of the Flex meal plans or one of the Traditional meal plans. The difference between the Flex and Traditional meal plans is that the Traditional meal plan offers a number of guaranteed meals at the Dining Commons. The Flex plans offer the same guaranteed meals plus an additional $150 worth of credit to use for snacks and drinks at the Student Center.

Does KSC offer an escort service?
Yes, Campus Safety operates a safety escort service 24 hours a day that is available to all KSC students, faculty, and staff. Escorts are limited to on-campus locations. Escorts may be walking or by vehicle and are provided on a staff available basis. There may be times when you are asked to wait at your location until an officer is available. If you are asked to wait in a parking lot, please remain in your vehicle with the doors locked until you see a Department vehicle or a Department of Campus Safety Officer. Flash your lights and the officer will come to you. Call the Department of Campus Safety at 603-358-2228 or stop in to Grafton House to request an escort.
