Driver Education

Fall 2008 class dates are listed; registration begins July 7, 2008. Registrations are taken on a first come, first served basis. Course seating is limited and early registration is advised.

Driver Education courses are offered through Keene State College Continuing Education Office. Classes are given at the Manchester Safety Center at the Manchester Airport. The courses fulfill the State of New Hampshire Department of Education college credit requirements toward Driver Education Teacher Certification. Provisional Certification requires an application to the program (see below) prior to registering for the first course. Course requirements for Provisional Certification are:
  • Introduction to Traffic Safety
  • Driver Education Classroom Methods
  • In-Vehicle Driver Education Methods
Standard Certification course requirements must be completed within two years of receiving your Provisional Certification:
  • Alcohol, Drugs, and Driving
  • Adolescent Growth and Development
  • Special Education in the Schools
  • Learning Styles/Teaching Styles

NOW REQUIRED: Program Application
Application to the Driver Education Program must be submitted to the Continuing Education office at Keene State College prior to or concurrently with registration for the first course in the program, Introduction to Traffic Safety. Course registrations will not be processed, nor will a seat be reserved, until the application is received and admission to the program is approved. Copies of the application may be made. SAFE 222-SC1C Introduction to Traffic Safety

3 credits

Elements that compose driving and the highway transportation system. Emphasis is on human performance, traffic engineering, and related research. For educators and those whose responsibilities include motor fleet safety. Due to the extensive content, students can expect considerable out-of-class assignments. Additional driving time will be scheduled with the instructor. Prerequisites: State of NH Driver Education Teacher certification requires driver license possession for five consecutive years, high school diploma or GED, valid operator's license and acceptable driving record. Students are required to have access to Internet and email.

SAFE 333-SC1C Driver Education Classroom Methods
3 credits

Professional preparation to meet the traffic and safety needs of schools and communities. Focus on methods of classroom and laboratory teaching. State and national standards are recommended for teaching driver and traffic safety education. (Includes laboratory experience.) Students can expect considerable out-of-class assignments. Prerequisites:Successful completion of SAFE-222, Introduction to Traffic Safety. State of NH Driver Education Teacher certification requires driver license possession for five consecutive years, high school diploma or GED, valid operator's license and acceptable driving record. Students are required to have access to Internet and email. Additional driving time will be scheduled before and after class on Saturdays.

SAFE 444-SC1C In-Vehicle Driver Education Methods
2 credits

Examines methods for delivering a sequential in-vehicle phase of a driver education program to novice drivers. Includes program organization, route and lesson design, instructional delivery, and assessment of behind-the-wheel lessons in a dual controlled vehicle. Requires in-vehicle demonstrations by staff and students. Prerequisites: successful completion of SAFE 333, Driver Education Classroom Methods. State of NH Driver Education Teacher certification requires driver license possession for five consecutive years, high school diploma or GED, valid operator's license and acceptable driving record. Students are required to have access to Internet and email.

This course will provide students with an introduction to learning and teaching style characteristics; instructional/teaching style preferences; and basic techniques for implementing style-differentiated instructional strategies. This course provides knowledge and skills to develop, evaluate and modify curriculum and instructional techniques in a mainstreamed classroom, as well as the skills to participate in the development of written individual educational plans. PLEASE NOTE: The textbook must be read before the start of the course, and students will be expected to access an on-line component of this course using their KSC web access.

*Tuition and fees are established by the University System of New Hampshire Board of Trustees and may be adjusted at any time.
