Driver Education
SPRING 2010 class dates are listed; registration began November 23, 2009. Registrations are taken on a first come, first served basis. Course seating is limited and early registration is advised. Driver Education courses are offered through Keene State College Continuing Education Office. Classes are given at the Manchester Safety Center at the Manchester Airport. The courses fulfill the State of New Hampshire Department of Education college credit requirements toward Driver Education Teacher Certification. REQUIRED as of SPRING 2009: Program Application, meeting with Driver Education Program Coordinator and Driving Skills Assessment Acceptance to the Driver Education Program must occur by the Continuing Education office at Keene State College prior to registration for the first course in the program, Introduction to Traffic Safety. Course registrations will not be processed, nor will a seat be reserved, until the application is received and admission to the program is approved and complete. Driver Education - SPRING 2010SAFE 222-SC1C Introduction to Traffic Safety
3 credits Elements that compose driving and the highway transportation system. Emphasis is on human performance, traffic engineering, and related research. For educators and those whose responsibilities include motor fleet safety. Due to the extensive content, students can expect considerable out-of-class assignments. Prerequisite: Acceptance to the Keene State Driver Education Teacher Certification Program. SAFE 333-SC1C Driver Education Classroom Methods Professional preparation to meet the traffic and safety needs of schools and communities. Focus on methods of classroom and laboratory teaching. State and national standards are recommended for teaching driver and traffic safety education. (Includes laboratory experience.) Students can expect considerable out-of-class assignments. Prerequisite: Successful completion of SAFE-222, Introduction to Traffic Safety. SAFE 444-SC1C In-Vehicle Driver Education Methods Examines methods for delivering a sequential in-vehicle phase of a driver education program to novice drivers. Includes program organization, route and lesson design, instructional delivery, and assessment of behind-the-wheel lessons in a dual controlled vehicle. Requires in-vehicle demonstrations by staff and students. Students can expect considerable out-of-class assignments. Prerequisite: Successful completion of SAFE 333, Driver Education Classroom Methods. HLSC 490-SC1C Alcohol, Drugs and Driving (Spring)3 credits Instructor: Mary Dube Mondays, January 25-May 3, 2010 Mondays 6:30PM-9:20PM Safety Center, Manchester NH Tuition and Fees: NH Resident $978 Non-Resident $1,065 This course is a study of the signs and symptoms of chemical dependency, alcoholism, and drug addiction. Examines the effect of chemical dependency on the body, family, and driving skills. Covers the pharmacology of alcohol and mind-altering drugs, treatment, treatment resources, and prevention issues. EDUC 495-SC1C: Adolescent Growth and Development (Spring) This course is a survey of adolescent development focusing on physical, cognitive, social, and emotional domains. Class sections address the relationship between theory and human relations in the classroom. PLEASE NOTE: The textbook must be read before the start of the course, and students will be expected to access an on-line component of this course using their KSC web access.*Tuition and fees are established by the University System of New Hampshire Board of Trustees and may be adjusted at any time.
