Marilyn Monroe:anatomy of Icon (IHFILM-199)

This course will be an intense cultural/ideological/feminist study of Marilyn Monroe and her films. Monroe, who began life as Norman Jean Baker, is one of the most tragic figures infilm's history. Plucked from obscurity and molded for superstardom, Monroe's legend has become mythologized in American culture. This course, through books, documentaries, paintings, feminist essays, and Monroe's films, will work toward demystifying the mythology that surrounds Monroe. Films will include Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, Bus Stop, The Misfits, and Insignificance.
