Contemporary Middle East (IHHIST-399)
This course will study the history of the Arab lands, Turkey, and Iran from the early nineteenth century to the present. Among the topics covered will be the decline of the Turkish and Iranian empires, the development of European enterprise and rule in the region, the growth of nationalism, and decolonization and restructuring. It will provide a comprehensive view of political, economic, social, religious, and cultural developments, with emphasis on the issues currently confronting the peoples of the region.
