With graduation over and the severity of illness associated with H1N1 milder than initially expected, our campus has a significantly reduced risk of H1N1 cases than we did a week ago.
It is important to remember that one case of the H1N1 (swine flu) virus has been identified in Keene. Several cases of seasonal flu have also been identified. Individuals should continue to maintain vigilant prevention strategies in order to minimize the transmission of illness.
Keep these recommendations in mind at all times:
- Cover sneezes and coughs with a tissue or your elbow.
- Dispose of soiled tissue in the trash after use.
- Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash them frequently with soap and water.
- Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are a good alternative if soap and water is not available.
- Do not share drinks.
- Anyone who falls ill should self-isolate (i.e., stay away from others). Depending on the severity of your symptoms, consider contacting your health-care provider, who will decide on the need for testing or treatment for influenza. If H1N1 is diagnosed through your primary-care doctor, the public health department will be notified and will communicate with the College if needed.
- Anyone with influenza-like illness should stay isolated at home until free of symptoms for at least 24 hours. If H1N1 influenza has been diagnosed, the isolation period is at least 7 days or until 24 hours after symptoms resolve, whichever is longer.
