At 5:15 one summer morning in 1940, Chiune Sugihara, Japan's consul-general in Lithuania, awoke to the sound of a low rumble outside. It was the sound of over 200 persons filling the crowded street outside the consulate. The consul immediately hid his wife and children, fearing the worst. It did not take him long to realize that those outside were Jews hoping to get visas that would take them out of the country to freedom. While American consuls throughout the neutral world were instructed not to grant such visas, Sugihara took it upon himself to issue an estimated 1600 visas. japanese with English sub-titles.
