Protection of Property
Most thefts occur when property is left unattended, for example, in unlocked residence rooms or in the Dining Commons or Mason Library. The following procedures are recommended to students:
- Do not leave wallets, purses, wristwatches, money, calculators, personal computers, and other items of value exposed on desks or dressers.
- Request identification and authorization from people who desire access to your room to do work or to remove equipment for servicing. All Keene State College employees have been issued name badges. Make sure you see it.
- Never lend keys out to anyone, especially strangers.
- When leaving your room unoccupied, be sure that:
- All doors are closed and locked, even if you will be gone a few moments. Those few moments are when most thefts
occur.
- All easily removable valuables are stored out of sight.
- All windows are closed and locked.
- When taking a shower, lock your room and take your key with you in the shower. Students have reported that keys left in
pockets of robes or clothing have been removed to gain access to rooms.
- Report lost or stolen residence keys to Residential Life Office.
- Never leave personal property unattended. Every year students lose jackets and purses from Mason Library and the Dining Commons. When in public buildings, keep your property with you.
- Keep your car locked at all times. Don't leave packages or valuables in full view inside. Lock them in the trunk.
- Record serial numbers, model and brand names of possessions and descriptions of all vehicles for future reference. Keep a duplicate copy of this list in a separate location from the original. Stolen property cannot be lawfully reclaimed unless you can positively identify it.
- When leaving your room for any extended period of time, such as Christmas break or spring break, store your valuables in a secured area.
- Consider purchasing insurance. The College is not responsible for loss of property from your room.
