Diversity Outcomes for General Education

Recognition and understanding of the relationship between identity and culture will be demonstrated by:

  • an ability to recognize that personal identity is shaped by community.
  • an ability to appreciate communities as composed of people with multiple perspectives and backgrounds that change over time.
  • an understanding that different cultures may have different social values.
  • an ability to recognize the role of culture and society in passing on, shaping and refining personal values.

Knowledge and understanding that the world is made up of diverse cultures will be demonstrated by:

  • an understanding of the processes by which race, ethnicity and other categories of difference are socially constructed in the United States.
  • knowledge of at least one non-Western world culture derived from materials produced by members of that culture.
  • comparative understanding of diverse world cultures.

An understanding of the impact of power and privilege on relationships among people and among cultures will be demonstrated by:

  • knowledge that unequal power relations contribute to social issues of bias, stratification and discrimination.
  • an understanding of the role of power and privilege in the social construction of justice.
  • the ability to analyze the role that social institutions play in establishing, maintaining, or restructuring majority and minority rights.

The ability to integrate and apply knowledge of diverse cultural views and perspectives will be demonstrated by:

  • the ability to take into consideration diverse experiences and perspectives when developing arguments, hypotheses and research projects.
  • the ability to examine thoughtfully personal and community values in light of experiences with societal diversity.
  • the ability to negotiate difficult dialogues in intercultural contexts.
