The Word Along Appian Way

Sad news
Our community learned of the passing of Dr. Charles (Chuck) Hildebrandt, who, according to his family, battled Alzheimer's disease and dementia for ten years. Dr. Hildebrandt was Professor of Sociology at Keene State College from 1969 until his retirement in 1998, and founder of the Cohen Center for Holocaust Studies at Keene State College.

Keene State will hold a memorial for Dr. Hildebrandt Monday, November 3 at 4 p.m. in the Recital Hall at Brickyard Arts Center.

Dr. Vincent Receives 2008 Distinguished Teacher Award
Dr. Paul Vincent, professor of Holocaust Studies, received the 2008 Distinguished Teacher Award from the Keene State College Alumni Association at the New Student Convocation ceremony on August 24.

The award is based on four criteria: excellence in the classroom, encouragement of independent thinking, rapport with students both in and out of the classroom, and effective student advising.

Colleagues and students who nominated Dr. Vincent describe him as a "master teacher" both in the classroom and through his work with the biennial Holocaust Studies Summer Institute at the College, where teachers from the region and internationally come to learn about how to incorporate Holocaust studies into their courses.

Just for Alumni

From Patty Farmer
A Word from the New Director of Alumni and Parent Relations

Even though I have been connected with KSC for the better part of two decades, my first few months as director have shown me that there is a tremendous amount of information to learn about the college. What I already knew is just the tip of the iceberg!

I suspect that is true for most alums, and I plan to help facilitate many more opportunities for them to reconnect with students, faculty, staff, and administration to help us all better understand how extraordinary this place really is.

I look forward to reaching out to you and hope you will contact me as well as we plan our Centennial Grand Reunion and celebrate our anniversary classes - and all classes from the past 100 years.

To reach me, call 603-358-2370 or e-mail

Saturday, October 25th is Homecoming at KSC

Have you joined Keene and After?
Keene and After is a social networking site exclusively for KSC alums. It is a great place to reconnect with old friends and make new acquaintances. In order to maintain the integrity and security of the site, you'll need an invitation to become a member, but any and all alums are most welcome. If you'd like to join and haven't yet been invited, please contact Patty Farmer '92 at

Just for Parents

Parents Association Elects Two New Officers
At the Parents Association Annual Meeting held on Saturday, September 27, Barbara Johnson was elected President and Jane Sadzewicz was elected Treasurer. Barbara has been a member of the Association for many years, and her granddaughter Jolene is in her senior year here. Jane's son Justin is a junior and is the KSC student representative to the USNH Board of Trustees.

Since the annual meeting, the following association members have stepped forward to fill three vacant positions: Rich Schleckser for vice president, Rebecca Galloway for secretary, and April Staley for ad hoc member. A vote will be taken at the November 30 meeting regarding those positions on the executive committee.

Membership Drive Underway
The 2008-09 school year is well underway and parents are signing up for their memberships. For more information on the benefits of joining the Parents Association, or to download a membership form, browse the Parents Association website.

Parent/Family Weekend
Despite hit-or-miss weather, parents, students, siblings, and extended family members had a great time at the 2008 KSC Parent/Family Weekend festivities. The weekend was a great success in many respects, with all ticketed events (Casino Night, Magician/Comedian Show, and Concert Choir Cabaret) selling out well in advance. Special thanks to the Social Activities Council, Concert Choir, Parents Association, President Helen Giles-Gee, the President's Cabinet, Athletics, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Student Center, Sodexho, and many others for all of their work to ensure that everyone had a wonderful experience. Plans are underway for Parent/Family Weekend 2009!

Volunteers Needed
You don't need to live nearby to help out with Parents Association activities. As they say, where there is a will, there is a way! Let us know if you have an interest in helping out on a committee (we often meet by conference call) or if you know you will be on campus and would like to help with a Parent Association event for an hour or two. Opportunities exist in early December to help distribute exam "survival kits"; please let us know if you can help. Phone 603-358-2369 or 800-572-1909, option 6, or email
