Appian Way may have six-foot snowbanks by the end of the month, but at this moment of writing in early January, it's 57 degrees at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and the daffodils and tulips outside Fiske Hall think it is spring. Keene State welcomes the second semester with a full lineup of news, from athletics to architecture to a chance to design the centennial logo. This issue of KSC Newsline offers special information for alumni and parents, too.

The Word Along Appian Way

Centennial Logo Design Contest
Fire up your creativity and start thinking about the perfect logo for the KSC 2009 centennial. The steering committee invites students, faculty, staff, and alumni to participate. (This logo will not replace the official College logo.) A cash prize will be awarded to the designer of the winning logo.

The first-round deadline is February 1, 2007.

Specifications and deadlines.

"In Perfect Harmony" – the founding of KSC
Keene residents thronged to City Hall on a Saturday night in February 1907 to debate the merits of establishing a "normal school" in town to fill the desperate need for teachers in rural schools. State Superintendent of Schools Henry Morrison, a progressive educator, used his influence to promote a school for Keene.

On February 9, distinguished actors will reprise the events of the historic meeting 100 years ago. Please join the audience in the Mabel Brown Room at 7 p.m. as Dr. Helen Giles-Gee, USNH Chancellor Stephen Reno, USNH Board of Trustees Chair Andrew Lietz, Mayor Michael E. J. Blastos, City Manager John MacLean, and others reenact the spirited discussion and unanimous public vote to support Keene Normal School, which would open its doors in 1909 and operate "in perfect harmony" with other local schools. Professor Dan Patterson of the Theater Department will direct the performance.

KSC Offers Architecture Degree
Sustainable design, green architecture, solar energy, and other environmentally sensitive practices are key components of KSC's new preprofessional four-year bachelor's degree program in architecture.

Students put theory into practice by working with local clients to find design solutions for real problems – affordable housing, energy-efficient construction, creative use of space, and other needs in the Monadnock region.

The new degree program combines technical expertise with a broad liberal-arts education to prepare students for careers and further study.

Ask the Owl
Newsline's Question of the Month

Ask the Owl wonders:
Who are these people and where did they find snow?

Meet Al '64 and Marion '63 Lake, retired teachers whose idea of taking it easy is to spend a week in January as volunteer cooks at the Mount Washington Observatory. We'll tell their story in the late winter issue of Keene State Today.

In the meantime, please share your own stories of your volunteer activities. Whether you are retired or not (even if you are just plain tired), what brings you the most satisfaction as a volunteer?

We'd love to hear about your experiences and any advice about volunteering. Tell us your story by e‑mailing
