Keene State gets ready to welcome the class of 2011 in style with a formal New Student Convocation. Eighty-seven lucky residents will be moving into beautifully refurbished Fiske Hall. This issue of KSC Newsline also offers reminders of upcoming events on campus, including Homecoming, the fall Citizenship Symposium, and more.

The Word Along Appian Way

Welcome to the class of 2011!
Move-in Day, August 25, will see the arrival of 1,362 new first-year students. For details on the weekend plans, check www.keene.edu/startup. This year, a highlight is the revival of the traditional New Student Convocation on Sunday afternoon, an opportunity for the whole class to meet Dr. Helen Giles-Gee and the KSC faculty and to hear about the values and campus culture of KSC.

Roadwork, continued
This summer has seen the construction of not one, but two major roundabouts in Keene. The project at the intersection of Route 101 and Winchester Street (Route 10) opened for traffic the last week of July, and it works! Traffic flows smoothly and steadily. Closer to campus, work continues on the Main/Marlboro/Winchester roundabout, which will be completed by November 1.

Lazy days of summer?
Not on Keene State's campus. In addition to the regular round of summer classes and residence hall maintenance projects, we've seen steady progress on the total renovation and restoration of Fiske Hall, KSC's first and oldest residence hall. The building looks as beautiful as the day it opened in 1914 – and with a full quota of modern amenities to boot. Original materials such as the slate roofing tiles have been reused where possible or saved for another use. The stately building at the head of the Quad will be ready for action on August 25.

Honors Scholarships Announced
A recent $100,000 grant from the William T. Morris Foundation will provide scholarships for all 38 students enrolled in the new Honors Program – a boon to the overall goal of access to high-quality public education.

Congratulations to the scholars and to the faculty members who worked so hard to create the new curriculum.

KSC Art Students Win in Florence
While studying in one of the art capitals of the world, Tim Larosee and Jessica Becker won the top two prizes in "The Art Is in the Streets" competition at the Lorenzo de' Medici Art Institute in May. Both students were studying abroad through the College exchange program. More information here.

Getting Here
Keene's major traffic improvement projects and continuing changes to KSC's campus, prompted updates to our campus map and driving directions.

Jim Laurier, local artist, keeps our map current and true to the unique character of a campus both contemporary and historic. From his large map, smaller specialty maps are produced to help visitors get to specific destinations such as Admissions, Residence Halls, the Cohen Center, and Athletics.

Jim's map is also used to create all the maps for our virtual tour.

Our driving directions page uses local knowledge to get visitors here simply and directly whether traveling from north, south, east, or west. Both turn-by-turn text directions and a directions map are provided. It also features a link to the N.H. Department of Transportation's page on current road conditions.

The Alumni Association Board of Directors for 2007-08 has been announced and is available here. Thanks to everyone for your valuable help!

Here in the Alumni Office we are still talking about Reunion 2007 and what a memorable time it was. Reunion 2008 (June 6-8, 2008) will be here before we know it. Reunion Weekend provides an opportunity to reconnect and reminisce, and we want your on-campus experience to be as memorable as possible. Your help is needed. Please complete one of the following surveys.

Just for Alumni
Help Out under the Tent on Move-In Day
Calling all parents, alumni, and KSC friends! Join us under the welcome tent on Fiske Quad on Saturday, August 25, to hand out hot dogs, chips, and soda to new students and their parents. Help give these newest members of the KSC family a hearty welcome. If you have some free time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. that Saturday, please contact the Alumni Office, and we'll add you to the list of participants: 358-2369 or alumni@keene.edu.

Reunion Planning Workshop, Sept. 15
Help make Reunion 2008 the best ever. Join the gang from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, September 15, in the Madison Street Lounge in the Student Center to start planning for next year's reunion (scheduled for June 6-8). Classes ending in "3" or "8" (five-year anniversaries or multiples thereof) are especially encouraged to attend. Believe it or not, this will be the 25th reunion for the class of '83, so let's make this reunion an extraordinary event!

Homecoming and the Pumpkin Festival, Oct. 19-20
Don't miss KSC's and the city of Keene's biggest celebration and most beautiful time of the year. The festivities start here on campus with the great Pumpkin Lobotomy on Friday afternoon (Oct. 19), followed by the homecoming bonfire that evening. Grab a pumpkin and your creative flair and help Keene set another world record.

There will be plenty to do on campus when Homecoming 2007 really kicks into gear on Saturday. Make sure to visit the Alumni Hospitality Tent between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., where you're always an honored guest. Check out the free refreshments, raffles, and music. Don't miss the alumni swimming/diving reunion, the men's rugby reunion, the Phi Mu Delta reunion, or the big game as the KSC women's soccer team takes on UMass Boston.

A short walk downtown takes you into the excitement of the record-setting Pumpkin Festival (www.pumpkinfestival.org). You'll find plenty of vendors, booths, and lots of kid-centered activities, including a costume parade at noon and a huge fireworks display at night.

Limited free parking is available on campus for alumni. But it's on a first-come, first-served basis, so preregister here early.

For information and schedule updates, visit www.keene.edu/alumni/homecoming.cfm or call the Alumni Office at 603-358-2369 or 800-KSC-1909.
