Dr. Benjamin A. Valentino, associate professor of Government at Dartmouth College, will deliver the Third Annual Zeta Chi Rho (ZXP) lecture at Keene State College on Monday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. The program is sponsored by the Academic Program for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and will be held in the Keene State College Alumni Center. Dr. Valentino will discuss Humble Humanitarianism: The Case for Non-Military Humanitarian Intervention. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Dr. Benjamin A. Valentino took his baccalaureate degree at Stanford University and his Ph.D. in political science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His 2004 publication Final Solutions: Mass Killing and Genocide in the Twentieth Century (Cornell University Press) received the Edgar S. Furniss Book Award, bestowed annually to an author whose first book is judged to make an exceptional contribution to the study of national and international security.

Professor Valentino has served as consultant to several agencies and organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, devoted to developing early warning models for genocide and mass atrocity. His current work centers on projects focused on the targeting of civilian populations during times of war and the determinants of American public support for the use of force. His essay "The True Costs of Humanitarian Intervention" appeared in the Nov./Dec. 2011 issue of Foreign Affairs.

Dr. Valentino's lecture is funded by the Holocaust and Genocide Studies department at Keene State College, the Holocaust and Genocide Studies Gift Fund, and Zeta Chi Rho (ZXP), the Holocaust and Genocide Studies honor society, which is dedicated to recognizing superior academic work in this field.
