Dear Campus Community:
You have likely learned by now of the NH Senate's decision to reduce the University System of New Hampshire state appropriation beyond the 45% cut passed by the House. If upheld, this appropriation effectively slashes the university system's appropriation by nearly 50% in FY2012 and about 47% in FY2013. This news is dismaying.
The budget passed by the Senate funds the university system in the amount of $50.6 million in FY2012 and $53.6 million in FY2013. The 45% reduction to the university system appropriation advanced by the House would have amounted to a loss of $5,866,610 for Keene State. The reduction now passed by the Senate could result in a further loss of $600,000 for Keene State College.
Though the Senate's vote completes an important step in the appropriation process, we remain unable to finalize Keene State's strategy for addressing state funding reductions. We await any possible changes to the budget that may occur during the conference committee discussion. We also do not have Board decisions about possible sources of additional revenue which could minimize the reduction that we will need to make. While the college has already reduced its budget by 20%, we need to prepare for additional reductions. As soon as more information is known and a firm plan of action is made, I will provide you with this information.
I ask for your continued patience. I know that anxiety levels are high as we navigate this difficult terrain, especially in regard to the possible elimination of positions. I understand that rumors may begin during such times where some persons speculate resulting in untruths that fill the void such as which positions are "safe" or "unsafe". Though difficult, we must stay the course until the information we need to make crucial decisions is finalized.
Thank you.
Helen Helen F. Giles-Gee
President
