Undergrad Research Reaches for the Stars

Eric Sansone ’12 (pictured above), a Mathematics-Physics graduate now studying astronomy in graduate school at San Francisco State University, won a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) grant that sent him to the Institute of Astronomy in Honolulu for the summer of 2011.

He studied extrasolar planets and analyzed their detection data, then presented his results at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas.

Other physics students have researched mileage claims of hybrid cars, presented research on the physics of video game music, produced and characterized nanoparticles using state-of-the-art instrumentation, and investigated many other ways physics interacts with everyday life.
