The English Honor Society

Sigma Tau Delta

The Upsilon Pi chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, established in 1986, recognizes student achievement in English and fosters the study of language and literature outside of the classroom. The sixteen active members of the Honor Society are currently at work organizing campus events, promoting student engagement and excellence, and taking advantage of opportunities such as study abroad. We invite you to join us in this work!

Many of the lectures that Keene State is proud to sponsor originate in the English Department. Sigma Tau Delta members have had the opportunity to welcome such guests as world renowned Shakespeare scholar Stephen Greenblatt, leading scholar in early British literature Dympna Callaghan, the political writer Thomas Oliphant, and Partners in Health worker Dr. Henry Walton. Sigma Tau Delta members have hosted the authors of the summer reading program, including Sherman Alexie, Gish Jen, and Janisse Ray.

Sigma Tau Delta members read the books the program and share their enthusiasm for reading with first-year students. Sigma Tau Delta also sponsors events such as a graduate school panel, where students were given the opportunity to interact with a former Keene State English major who now works in graduate admissions at Simmons College.

Members of Sigma Tau Delta have bright minds and promising futures. We take an annual book shopping trip to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where we spend the day in Harvard Square, sharing a meal at a local pub or restaurant. Past members have continued their intellectual activities in a range of careers, including matriculation in the top graduate schools in the country. In fact Peter Beauchamp, the 2006-07 President of the Keene State Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, is currently attending law school.
