Dr. Dottie Bauer

Dottie's specialty is Early Childhood Education. She came to Keene State College in 1981 to teach at the Child Development Center after 8 years teaching in the Boston area, and stepped out of the preschool classroom and into the faculty in 1989.

She has taught courses in child development, exceptionality, and learning; curriculum methods for early childhood; current issues and school effectiveness; educational research; and regularly supervises students in their field experience in early education and primary grades classrooms. Dottie has taken her turn as department chair three times and is currently program coordinator for the Early Childhood undergraduate program and the Curriculum & Instruction graduate program at KSC. Her 2005-2006 sabbatical included consulting and teaching with area child care providers and a travel/study experience in Quito, Ecuador; in 2013 she visited Italy to study the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education.

Dottie earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Pomona College in Claremont, California; her master's degree in early childhood and special education from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and her doctorate in human development from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She also holds the Trainer/Mentor/Faculty Level 4 certificate from the State of New Hampshire Child Development Bureau.

Her professional interests are early childhood curriculum, teacher training, and developmentally appropriate practice. She has co-authored a book and an article on Early Sprouts, a nutrition and gardening curriculum for preschool, with Dr. Karrie Kalich and Deirdre McPartlin. A new article on the nutritionally purposeful classroom will be published in the November 2014 issue of Young Children, a journal of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). On the state and national level, Dottie has served on the NH Early Learning Guidelines Task Force, and is an NCATE reviewer for early childhood professional program reviews for NAEYC. She also represents Keene State College on the NH Council of Teacher Education and has been active in the development of their new program review model.
