Our Ideal Applicant
Our ideal applicant demonstrates interest in community nutrition, public health, and/or education. A successful application must include all of the required information outlined below. We rank the following parts of your application in the following order of importance:

1st Work Experience/Volunteer Experience
2nd Letter/Essay
3rd Portfolio
4th Dietetics GPA
5th Letters of Recommendation
6th Telephone Interview

We are looking for the letter/essay, portfolio, telephone interview and work/volunteer experience to demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • Self-direction and independence
  • Flexibility
  • Good organizational and communication skills
  • Responsibility
  • Creativity
  • Interest in community nutrition, public health, and education


Completing the Application

ADA Application
Complete the ADA application form. A copy is on the web site or a disk can be purchased through ADA at 800-877-1600.

Work Experience
Include all work experience both paid and volunteer. Be specific about hours worked per week, length of time in the job, duties performed and amount of responsibility.

Recommendations

  • A minimum of three letters of recommendation with at least one letter from a work supervisor and one letter from an instructor in your academic major
  • Use the ADA recommendation form found on this web site
  • Ask that the recommendation include a narrative that specifically addresses your skills in the following areas and include relevant examples: self direction, flexibility, organization, team work, communication.

Personal Essay
Address the following questions. Answers should be clear and concise but complete enough to cover your thoughts completely. Address each question separately.

  1. Given that this internship is a wellness-focused program how do you envision it? Discuss how you think will be different from other internships?
  2. How do you think school, work and other experiences have contributed to your personal growth? Give an example from each.
  3. The following is a list of characteristics important to a successful internship year. Give a specific example of how you have demonstrated each of them.
    • Flexibility
    • Teamwork
    • Self-direction
    • Organizational skills
    • Communication skills
  4. Describe a situation or project in which you took a leadership role. What specifications did you take to move the project forward? What roadblocks did you encounter and what did you do to overcome them? What went well and what would you have changed?
  5. What have you learned from your successes? Your mistakes?
  6. What specific experiences would you like to have during your internship year?

Grades
Submit transcripts from all post-secondary schools you have attended. Selection will be based on your total GPA and GPA in dietetics and nutrition courses.

Portfolio Materials
Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit additional materials which will help the selection committee learn more about the strengths and skills you will bring to this program. Portfolios are used to score and rank the applicants. Guidelines for the portfolio can be found on the website. If you wish to have your portfolio returned to you after the selection process please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope or check to cover the cost of postage.

Postcard
If you wish to be notified whether or not your application is complete, address and stamp a postcard and include it in your packet. The postcard will only be returned to you if it has been addressed and stamped.

Application Fee
A nonrefundable $60 application fee is to accompany the application. Checks are to be made out to Keene State College.

Telephone Interview
Once applications are screened some of you will be called to schedule a telephone interview. The interviews are conducted by current interns and will be recorded in order for the selection committee to listen to them.
