General Music K-12 Practicum
Course Summary: This course includes observation, planning, teaching, and assessing general music lessons (K-12) in accordance with standards of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Students attend two 5-week placements to provide more variety with K-12 general music experiences. Each placement hosts one student per classroom. Students may teach up to 3 activities per placement. Students submit weekly reflective journals, video record lessons, and attend one seminar per month to present teaching video excerpts.
Cooperating teachers are expected to pre-approve lesson plans and discuss adjustments to activities and procedures with practicum students. In addition, they will complete the KSC Teacher Candidate Dispositions form at the conclusion of each 15 hour/5 week placement. College supervisors will complete 3 clinical evaluations in response to seminar video presentations throughout the semester, and the KSC Teacher Candidate Dispositions form at the end of the 30 hour/10 week placement series.
Field Experience: 30 hours/semester. Days and times arranged by coordinator of music education and cooperating teacher.
