EDUC 331

Secondary Methods I: English

Fieldwork Summary: Overall, students are expected to conduct 20 hours of field observations including teaching one lesson. 2-3 students are assigned to each classroom, although they are not required to attend observation sessions together. Ideally, the first 10 hours are more observational and would include observations in as many English teachers’ classrooms at a placement school as possible. For the second 10 hours, students stay with one English teacher and get as involved in that classroom as their comfort and development allow. This time could include (but is not limited to): one-on-one tutoring, mini-lessons, full lessons, and small-group facilitation. During this time, students are expected to teach their required lesson. The main goals for the field experience are thoughtful observation and developing, reflective professional practice. Students complete written reflections on their time in the field (to be assessed by KSC field instructor).

Field hours include: 20 hours over the course of the semester, to be scheduled at times mutually amenable to the student and cooperating teacher

These 20 field hours take place as part of a twice-weekly seminar (EDUC 331, Methods I). When students finish this course as a whole, they will be able to: • design content-specific, coherent lessons for varying class period lengths. • develop learning outcomes for students. • write measurable objectives. • identify middle and high school philosophies for reading. • develop age- and ability-appropriate activities. • identify and use the Common Core standards in planning. • plan for differentiated instruction. • reflect on field observations. • teach effective, engaging lessons for the class.
